The Crisis:
• During the 2024–2025 festive season, nearly 10,000 motorists were arrested, with 4,000 facing drunk driving charges in just one month.
• Over the past three financial years, police opened 140,919 drunk driving cases, with more than 142,000 referred for prosecution.
• In the Western Cape alone, traffic officers recorded 24 drunk driving arrests in a single week leading up to the 2025 festive season.
